Our first meeting was by the canal a couple of hours before the ceremony. We warmed to each other as we walked from point to point that I had picked out that morning for portraits, improvising along the way with each change in the light; as the sun moved behind a cloud or reflected off a building. The first photograph is a good example of this. I could just tell by the way the light was hitting my hands that I had to shoot a portrait here in front of this otherwise banal, canal-side wall. You learn to find the light. After the walkabout we attended the quick and intimate, dimly-lit ceremony with a symbolic watering of a tree that would later be planted in the couple's garden. Rings were warmed. The knot was tied in technicolor ribbon. Siblings and friends sang and played guitar.
